Pruning

For safety and appeal

Pruning

Tree pruning can be the solution for overgrown, unattractive, or even dangerous trees. Pruning can be an affordable alternative to the complete removal of a tree. Routine pruning and trimming can increase the overall curb appeal of your landscape. Each species of tree requires specialized care when it comes to pruning. Our extensive knowledge of trees help us to know exactly how to maintain your trees.

Reasons for Tree Pruning:

Aesthetics:

pruning a tree to maintain shape and appearance

Safety:

pruning dead or broken branches that could fall, branches that obstruct vision for drivers. Liability or risk reduction pruning associated with life safety and damage prevention.

Health of the tree:

systematically pruning away infected branched or limbs, pruning limbs that are rubbing against each other, thinning the crown of a tree to improve airflow.

Types of pruning provided:

  • Deadwood Pruning: Deadwood development is a natural process for all trees. Leaving deadwood within the canopy promotes the growth of fungi that are directly related to rot and decay. In an effort to mitigate the spread of rot and decay, the common practice is to remove the deadwood. Deadwood also is a hazard for persons or property (targets) located within the drop area of a tree’s canopy and should be removed to increase safety and decrease liability.
  • Canopy Thinning: The process of removing excess limbs from a tree’s canopy to lighten the overall weight to a tree’s main stems and allow light and airflow to penetrate to the interior of the canopy. Greater airflow allows for increased pest resistance and fungal prevention while the additional sunlight will assist in the development of strong supporting limbs.
  • Canopy Raising: Providing a predetermined ground clearance distance is a key objective within this overall pruning task. During field observations, the greatest area of concern was liability created by low hanging limbs for pedestrians, vehicles, and maintenance equipment. Proper ground clearance will reduce liability concerns, provide proper pedestrian and vehicular access, and allow for adequate room for maintenance purposes.
  • Structural Pruning: Pruning to provide structural correctness and proper form is very important for the long term health and risk reduction of a tree. A young tree with two strong leaders soon becomes a mature codominant tree with a weak stem union and included bark. This equals a hazard to public safety and in many instances, a shorter life for the tree. In many instances, these issues can be corrected by pruning and subjugating the correct limbs.

Periodic pruning is essential for all tree within the managed landscapes, both young and old. The results include trees that look better, fit their location without conflicts, reduce potential hazards, and show improved health and longevity. How do you know what type of pruning is best for you? Let one of our Certified Arborist discuss it first hand with you in order to determine the best fit!

Cabling and Bracing

There are times when traditional pruning maintenance will not solve your tree’s problem. Perhaps your tree has weak limbs, areas of decay, or poor root systems. We can install a system of cables and bracing rods to maintain the structural integrity of your tree. These cables and braces offer additional support for the tree, but do not necessarily guarantee against future structural failure.

Tree Removal

Tree removal should always be a last resort. Our team will assess your tree’s health and determine if it needs to be removed. We can remove dead, diseased, or dangerous trees safely. This is not something you should do on your own! You need a qualified team of tree care professionals to safely remove any dead trees you may have on your property.

Reasons for Tree Removal:

  • Tree is diseased, dying, or dead
  • Tree is considered hazardous beyond repair
  • Tree has outgrown its growth area
  • Tree is causing an obstruction that can’t be remedied by pruning

Stump Grinding

Our team also provides stump grinding services. After a tree has been removed or has fallen down, a stump is left. These stumps are unsightly, a waste of space, and hazardous. Stump grinding can take care of the stump by grinding the stump into smaller pieces that can be used as mulch or ground cover. Usually, the stump is ground several inches below the surface level, so it can be covered with dirt.

Reasons for Stump Removal:

  • Stumps are unsightly
  • Stumps take up valuable space
  • Stumps can be hazardous
  • Replanting in the same area!

Deep Root Fertilization

Trees in urban areas often experience limited root space and poor soil conditions. Due to these factors, they may lack essential nutrients to help them thrive. This is where our deep root fertilization service comes in. Unlike grass and other plants, trees need to receive fertilizer deep in their root system. With deep root fertilization, a high quality nutrient solution is injected into the root zone of a tree to help with aeration and oxygenation. This process is usually administered depending on the current condition of your trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs in worse condition will require more attention in an effort to get them back to 100% healthy.

Did we mention that our fertilization products are all natural too? Our products contain no synthetic materials or compounds that are harmful to humans or animals. They also do not produce a dependency problem for your trees and shrubs as they are made from natural substances like seaweed and worm castings.

Consulting

Tree Ordinance Assistance

Primarily focused on residential and commercial developers but not excluding homeowners, SAS can provide the needed assistance in interpreting tree ordinances and recompense. Often times the legal terminology of an ordinance and the scientific terminology of arboriculture just don’t mix. We can decipher the terminology, evaluate the trees on-site, and even provide detailed report or plans for submittal to local planning boards. Our skilled ISA Certified Arborists know the local codes and, in some instances, assisted in writing them, so we’re prepared to help expedite your tree removal application so you can get to building. We’ll also be there to respond and adjust submitted plans if they are any comment from the issuing authority. Recompense, or the payment for trees removed, can be a tricky subject to face alone. SAS is here for you for every step in the process.

Tree Inventories

Tree inventories pertain to the collection of data on trees in an identified area. Gathering accurate information on tree species, DBH (diameter at breast height), condition, and condition classifying notes allows property owners and developers the essential knowledge in order to manage and maintain their natural assets and/or to develop land. During the inventory process all trees assessed can be tagged numerically with aluminum identification plates. That tag number then corresponds to the data reflected in the written report.

Customers use the report produced by SAS to ease the process of dealing with tree preservation ordinances in regards to specimen trees and proving site density. The removal of a specimen tree can have severe influence on the amount recompense paid and each municipality is different in defining a specimen tree. Let SAS help identify the specimen trees you should protect.

Tree Conservation Plans

Tree Conservation Plans (TCPs) are an additional layer of information on top of the tree inventory. These plans are often required and vary in their requirement depending on what municipality or agency you’re dealing with. TCPs provide a formal protection plan for natural assets located on-site needing protection when development occurs. We can identify sensitive environments, trees, and other areas to be preserved through the construction process and mitigate the impacts of those areas. SAS can produce these plans for construction documents sets and independently stamp and seal them in the State of Georgia.
SAS will help maximize opportunities for retaining and protecting trees of specimen designation, while justifying the removal for those that are not. From pre-development assessment to designing mitigation for tree losses, we will make a substantial contribution to the success of your development proposal.
*Trees as we all know are living organisms and are subject to the natural environment. SAS provide no guarantee as to the longevity of ANY tree as environmental conditions are unpredictable.
